Jason followed Satch to the Raptor with his mind racing. “We have to find her, Colonel. She may be the key to this whole thing.”

Satch stopped when they reached the truck. He put his boot up on the trailer hitch and leaned his elbow against the top of the tailgate. “You think Trudy’s shooting straight with you?”

“Yes,” Jason said. “I mean. I guess. Why would she lie?”

“There’s a code of honor on Sand Mountain, Jason. They watch after their own. Didn’t you say Trudy spoke pretty highly of Tyson Cade? That he looked after her after her husband left.”

“Yeah.”

“Well, maybe Trudy’s looking after Dooby Darnell. The woman is obviously smack-dab in the middle of this thing. And if Matty Dean did get her involved . . . then he might be wanting to be rid of her.”

The lifeline that Trudy Cowan had just provided him was precarious, and Jason felt a sinking sensation in the pit of his stomach. “All the more reason to find her.”
